The Battlefield franchise has carved a niche out for itself in the first
person shooter market as being known for it's authentic and realistic
gameplay, and balancing that realism with a healthy does of fun to
create the winning formula for their previous titles. Although
Battlefield 3 may be trying to take it to the competition this fall,
they won't be sacrificing this philosophy, or so says Patrick Back of
DICE. Bach thinks that the goal is still ' Authentic But Fun' gameplay
and that the game doesn't need to stir controversy to be heard among
the crowd.
In a recent interview with EDGE, Bach spoke on being controversial and
why he doesn't think the studio needs it to succeed.
“We’re not trying to base it on any political or religious conflict –
controversy is probably a good marketing tool, but we make games,” Bach
told Edge Magazine. “Our goal isn’t to make controversy. I don’t want
people to feel bad playing our game. Our goal is to create a fun,
entertaining experience. So we are trying to stay away from things that
are real – authentic and real don’t have to be the same thing.”
While their competitors deliver an experience that is right out of the
Michael Bay school of directing, Bach reiterates that Battlefield 3 is a
totally different experience than that. “No, no supervillains. But you
still want your enemy to be clear; you still want your player character
to have a clear motivation – that’s something we’re working on to find
the right balance.”
Battlefield 3 is staging for launch in late October on the PS3, PC, and
Xbox 360.
